THE SACRED RESCUE When Life Suddenly Breaks Apart: Finding God in the Silence
There are moments in life that divide everything into a “before” and an “after.”
Moments so painful that time itself seems to stop.
For me, that moment came on a late night during what was supposed to be a peaceful family vacation.
I remember hearing my daughter scream for help from the nearby cabin where she and my son were staying. Panic immediately took over my heart. I ran toward the bathroom door after she told me he wasn’t responding.
I pounded on the door repeatedly until it finally gave way.
And there he was.
My son lying motionless on the floor.
Foam around his mouth.
His neck turning blue.
I tried CPR. I called his name over and over. I begged God to help me. But there was no response. No pulse. Only silence.
That night became one of the deepest wounds of my life.
And even now, nearly nineteen years later, the memory still feels painfully close. Some grief never fully leaves us. Some pain becomes part of the soul we carry through life.
There were moments after that tragedy when I questioned everything.
Why did this happen?
Why didn’t God answer me?
Why does life sometimes change in a single breath?
And yet… somewhere within all the silence, heartbreak, and confusion, I slowly began to realize something:
God had not abandoned me.
Even when I could not feel Him… He was still there.
Not always removing the pain.
Not always explaining the suffering.
But quietly carrying me through what I could never survive alone.
Over time, I began reflecting on the sorrow of the Virgin Mother as she watched Jesus suffer and die. As a parent who lost a child, I gained a deeper understanding of how unbearable love and grief can feel together.
Pain changes us.
But sometimes, through faith, pain can also soften us… deepen us… and bring us closer to God in ways comfort never could.
That journey of grief, surrender, healing, and hope eventually became the foundation for a devotional I recently completed called:
