When Life Feels Unfair: Trusting God’s Sovereignty in the Pit

When Life Feels Unfair: Trusting God’s Sovereignty in the Pit

There are seasons when life shifts without warning.

A betrayal.
A setback.
A sudden loss of stability.

In those moments, it can feel as though everything familiar has been stripped away.

Joseph understood that feeling.

The Pit Was Real

Genesis 37 tells us that Joseph’s brothers stripped him of his coat and threw him into a pit (Genesis 37:23–24).

This was not symbolic hardship.
It was physical.
Immediate.
Unjust.

From the bottom of that pit, Joseph could not see Egypt.
He could not see the palace.
He could not see the reconciliation that would one day come.

He could only see darkness.

When life feels unfair, our vision narrows.

We measure the depth of the pit.
We replay the betrayal.
We question the promise.

But the pit was not outside God’s sovereignty.

God Governs Even What He Does Not Prevent

Scripture does not say God caused the brothers’ sin.

But it does show that their sin did not cancel His purpose.

Sovereignty does not mean suffering is small.
It means suffering is not ungoverned.

The pit did not disqualify Joseph.
It prepared him.

Hard seasons often feel like detours.
In truth, they may be development.

I have walked through seasons where circumstances shifted without explanation. Moments when getting back up required faith more than feeling.

The pit narrows perspective.
But sovereignty widens it.

What This Means for You

If you are in a season that feels unfair:

  • Your hardship is real.
  • Your questions are valid.
  • Your pain is not dismissed.

But neither is your situation random.

The same God who governed Joseph’s pit governs your present season.

What feels like interruption may be formation.

Reflection

  • Where has your vision narrowed because of pain?
  • Can you trust that this season, though difficult, is not outside God’s hand?

Anchor Thought:

What feels random is still regulated by God.
