Were You There When They Crucified My Lord?
— A Reflection on Presence, Pain, and Personal Faith
🌿 Opening Reflection
“Were you there when they crucified my Lord?”
It’s an old spiritual—simple, haunting, and deeply personal.
But it asks something more than history.
It asks you.
Not:
- Were people there?
- Did it happen?
But…
👉 Were YOU there?
✝️ More Than a Moment in History

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is not just an event recorded in Scripture.
It is the center of our faith.
Yet many of us live as if it were:
- distant
- detached
- something that happened back then
But this question pulls it into the present:
👉 Where are you in this story?
💔 The Crowd, The Cross, and… You
There were many there that day:
- The soldiers — carrying out orders
- The crowd — watching, shouting, judging
- The disciples — some hiding, some weeping
- Mary — standing in unbearable sorrow
And somewhere in that crowd…
we find ourselves.
Because if we’re honest:
- We’ve doubted like Thomas
- We’ve denied like Peter
- We’ve wandered like the others
And yes…
We’ve sinned.
🕊️ Why This Question Cuts So Deep
“Were you there…”
Because in a spiritual sense—
👉 we were.
It was not just nails that held Him there.
It was:
- our brokenness
- our failures
- our need for grace
He didn’t go to the cross despite us…
He went there because of us.
🌅 From Guilt to Grace

But the story doesn’t end at the cross.
If the question were only:
👉 Were you there when they crucified Him?
…it would leave us in sorrow.
But there is another question:
👉 Were you there when He forgave you?
Because from the cross, He said:
“Father, forgive them…”
Not later.
Not after repentance.
Not after we got our lives together.
Right there.
🙏 A Personal Invitation
This is where your faith becomes real.
Not in tradition.
Not in routine.
But in response.
So let me ask you again…
👉 Were you there?
And more importantly:
👉 Where are you now?
- Still watching from a distance?
- Still carrying guilt?
- Still unsure if grace is for you?
Or…
👉 Ready to step closer to the cross—not in shame, but in surrender?
💬 Gentle Truth
You were there.
But you are also invited back—
not to relive the pain…
…but to receive the love.
🙌 Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus,
I may not have stood at the physical cross,
but my life, my sins, and my struggles were part of that moment.
Thank You for loving me enough to endure it.
Help me not to stand at a distance anymore.
Draw me close—not in guilt, but in grace.
Teach me to live like someone who knows
what You did… and why You did it.
Amen.
