The Body Is the Temple of God

Introduction
Our bodies are not just flesh and bone — they are living sanctuaries where God desires to dwell.
To see the body as the temple of the Holy Spirit is to recognize that within us lies the very breath of God.
When we honor this truth, we begin to see health, holiness, and healing not as distant miracles but as divine gifts already living within us.
The Sacred Temple Within
We say that the body, being a temple of God, must be held as sacred and sovereign as it truly is.
It is to be respected, cared for, praised, and honored — for it is a creation and possession of God Himself.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?
You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your bodies.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19–20
The body is a temple of God because God may live in it — by our will and invitation.
When we open our hearts to Him, His Spirit takes residence within us.
And because His Spirit dwells within, the body carries a divine potential: the power to heal.
Jesus said, “Your faith has made you well” (Luke 8:48).
Faith activates the healing energy that already exists within us through God’s Spirit.
But our humanity, being frail and easily frightened, often lets fear overshadow that truth.
Guarding the Temple
We must never pollute the body — this sacred temple — with things that defile it: alcohol, tobacco, and harmful habits.
It’s like eating carelessly inside a holy sanctuary — disrespectful and out of place.
While we should treat our bodies with utmost care, it’s not about living in fear of physical imperfection.
Rather, when the body follows the ways of God, it becomes shielded and strengthened by His Spirit.
Then, through faith, it becomes as incorruptible as the Spirit that lives within it.
“Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.”
— Ephesians 5:18
“So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
— 1 Corinthians 10:31
Balance and Moderation
We may sometimes overindulge — in food, drink, or pleasure — but these are not the greatest threats.
The greater danger lies in forgetting who owns the temple.
We must keep our habits under control and live in moderation, for anything in excess can lead to harm.
“Everything is permissible for me,” but not everything is beneficial.
“I will not be mastered by anything.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:12
God reminds us not to worry too much about what we eat or drink or wear.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink;
or about your body, what you will wear.
Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?”
— Matthew 6:25
It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles, but what comes out — for what comes out reveals the heart (Matthew 15:11).
Therefore, we must be mindful not only of what we consume but also of what we speak and think.
The Power Within
When we believe that our existence is God’s will, we live in the strength of His Spirit.
At that moment, the Holy Spirit becomes our defender — the divine force that shields and empowers us.
“The Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you,
He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies.”
— Romans 8:11
If God is within me, His power radiates outward.
To be immersed in His Spirit is to be surrounded by His invincible light.
Even a moment of that divine presence — a nano-second of the Holy Spirit’s power — can heal and transform us.
So let us pray in faith:
“Lord Jesus, in Your holy name, all will be healed.”
Reflection Thought
The temple is not made of stone, but of flesh and faith.
When we keep it pure, humble, and filled with God’s presence,
we honor the Creator who made it — and invite His Spirit to dwell within us forever.
“For in Him we live and move and have our being.”
— Acts 17:28
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
thank You for the gift of this body — a temple You have chosen to dwell in.
Help us to honor You with our thoughts, our words, and our actions.
Cleanse us of anything that pollutes or weakens this sacred dwelling.
Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so that our bodies and minds may radiate Your glory.
May Your healing power flow through us — restoring, renewing, and strengthening every part of our being.
In Jesus’ name, we pray.
Amen.
