How Are You? — A Question of Truth and Faith
We hear this question almost every day: “How are you?”
It seems simple enough — yet how many of us can truthfully answer it?
In our younger, carefree days, our responses came easily:
“I’m fine!” “I’m great!” “I’m wonderful!”
But as life unfolds, filled with its share of heartbreaks, disappointments, and losses, that answer becomes harder to speak — and even harder to believe.
For someone who has lost a loved one, saying “I’m fine” can feel like a lie.
Grief and sorrow leave a silence in the heart that words cannot fill. Yet, even in that silence, God is not absent.
What We See and What We Don’t
Too often, we only believe in what we can see.
If something — or someone — is gone from our sight, we convince ourselves that it no longer exists.
But faith tells a different story.
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
— Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)
Just because we cannot see something does not mean it has ceased to exist.
We cannot see the wind, yet we feel it move.
We cannot see God’s Spirit, yet we feel His presence when our hearts are still.
It was the invisible God who made all things visible — the Creator of the universe, unseen yet ever present.
When Life Feels Impossible
In moments of sorrow or frustration, we cry out: “Why are things this way?”
We focus on the sickness, the loss, the problem — and not the remedy.
But Christ is our remedy. His Word is the healing that revives the broken spirit.
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28 (KJV)
When we feel overwhelmed and answer “How are you?” with pain instead of peace, remember — God already knows how we truly are.
He sees beyond our words.
He heals what our hearts cannot explain.
God’s Plan Beyond the Pain
When we cannot see the way forward, God already sees the whole road.
Our pain has purpose; our silence has meaning.
We may not understand it now, but as the Lord said:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.”
— Jeremiah 29:11 (KJV)
So when someone asks, “How are you?”
You can answer truthfully, “I am trusting in the Lord.”
Because even if we are not fine in the world’s eyes, we are held in God’s hands — and that is more than fine.
Reflection Prayer
Lord God,
You see what I cannot see.
You heal what I cannot mend.
When I am asked how I am, remind me that my true well-being rests not in the world’s comfort but in Your grace.
Help me to walk by faith, not by sight, and to trust that every unseen moment is guided by Your loving hand.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
