“Do You Love Me?” The Question Jesus Asked Peter—and Still Asks Us Today
Imagine Jesus looking directly into your eyes and asking one simple question:
“Do you love Me?”
How would you answer?
Most Christians would immediately say, “Yes, Lord. You know I love You.”
But when Jesus asked Peter this question, He was seeking more than an emotional response. He was inviting Peter to move beyond his failure, renew his commitment, and demonstrate his love through faithful action.
Peter’s Greatest Failure
Peter had once boldly declared that he would never abandon Jesus. Even if everyone else turned away, Peter insisted that he would remain faithful.
Yet on the night Jesus was arrested, fear took control.
Three different times, Peter was asked whether he knew Jesus. Three times, Peter denied Him. When Peter realized what he had done, he wept bitterly.
Peter loved Jesus—but he had failed Him.
Perhaps you understand that feeling.
You may love Jesus and still struggle with fear. You may sincerely want to follow Him and still make choices you regret. You may look back at moments when your faith weakened and wonder whether you have disappointed God beyond repair.
Peter’s story reminds us that failure does not have to be the end of our relationship with Jesus.
Jesus Came Looking for Peter
After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples beside the Sea of Galilee. There, He shared breakfast with them by the shore.
Then Jesus turned to Peter and asked:
“Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?”
Peter answered, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.”
Jesus replied:
“Feed My lambs.”
Jesus asked Peter the same question three times. Each time Peter affirmed his love, Jesus gave him a responsibility:
“Feed My lambs.”
“Tend My sheep.”
“Feed My sheep.”
—John 21:15–17
Peter had denied Jesus three times. Now, Jesus gave him three opportunities to declare his love.
This was not an act of humiliation. It was an act of restoration.
Jesus was showing Peter that his failure had not cancelled his calling.
Love for Jesus Becomes Action
Jesus did not simply say, “Thank you for loving Me.”
He told Peter to do something.
“Feed My sheep.”
Jesus connected Peter’s declaration of love with a life of service. Peter’s answer would be demonstrated by the way he lived, cared for others, and carried out the work Jesus entrusted to him.
The same principle applies to us.
Loving Jesus is more than saying the right words. Our love becomes visible through obedience, forgiveness, compassion, sacrifice, and service.
We demonstrate our love for Jesus when we:
- Forgive someone who has hurt us.
- Help someone who cannot repay us.
- Speak truth with kindness.
- Pray for people who are suffering.
- Encourage someone who has lost hope.
- Obey Jesus when doing so is inconvenient.
- Share His love with those who feel forgotten.
We do not earn salvation through these actions. We respond because we have already received His grace.

Jesus Already Knows Your Heart
Peter finally answered:
“Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.”
Peter knew he could not hide anything from Jesus—not his love, his fear, his failure, or his regret.
Neither can we.
Jesus knows when our faith is strong, and He knows when we are struggling. He sees the moments when we obey, and He also sees the moments when fear gets the better of us.
Still, He comes looking for us.
He does not ask, “Have you performed perfectly?”
He asks:
“Do you love Me?”
If your answer is yes, His invitation remains open:
Follow Me.
Serve others.
Care for My people.
Live what I have taught you.
Begin again.
Your Failure Has Not Cancelled Your Calling
Peter’s worst moment did not become the final chapter of his story.
Jesus restored him, recommissioned him, and used him to help build the early Church. The man who once denied knowing Jesus later stood boldly and proclaimed Him publicly.
That is what grace can do.
Your past does not have to define your future. Your mistakes do not place you beyond the reach of Christ. If you return to Him, He can restore your heart and give your life renewed purpose.
Today, imagine Jesus looking directly at you and asking:
“Do you love Me?”
If your answer is yes, do not let that answer remain only in your heart.
Live it.
Follow Him.
Love the people He places before you.
And do the next faithful thing He is asking you to do.
