The Most Important “Maybe” A New Year Reflection on Faith and Purpose

A Short Note to Ponder

Ahhh… here we are again, celebrating a brand-new year.
A time filled with hope, anticipation, and blessings yet to come.

And once again, we are surrounded by maybes.

Last year, and the years before it, I carried many maybes with me. Some were fulfilled. Many were not. That is simply life. Life will always be full of maybes, regardless of how much planning we do.

But there is something I have come to realize:
when one maybe fails to materialize, it often causes other maybes to fail as well.

As we grow older, these maybes begin to matter more. Not because we want more things—but because time itself becomes more valuable. Every passing year brings clarity, urgency, and perspective.

We commonly hear maybes like these:

  • Maybe I’ll become a better person this year
  • Maybe I’ll travel more
  • Maybe I’ll get that house, that car, or those things I’ve wanted
  • Maybe I’ll fix broken habits
  • Maybe I’ll mend broken relationships
  • Maybe I’ll finally change

And so the list goes on.

Some of these maybes will succeed. Some will not. But as we age, one maybe rises above all others—one that carries eternal weight:

“Maybe I will draw closer to God this year.”

Why is this the most important maybe?

Because the truth is simple and unavoidable:
we are closer to death today than we were yesterday.

This isn’t meant to create fear—it is meant to awaken purpose. Life is fragile. Time is not promised. And eternity waits for us all.

This maybe—drawing closer to the Lord Jesus Christ—is the one we should work hardest to turn into reality. Because He is the Master of turning maybes into certainties. Where our strength fails, His grace prevails. Where fear exists, His peace remains.

With Him, all things are accomplished.
With Him, there is lasting peace.
With Him, eternity is secured.

This year, let us not leave the most important maybe unfulfilled.

📖 Scripture to Reflect On

“Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
Matthew 6:33

💭 Closing Thought

What if this year, instead of saying maybe, we chose to say yes
yes to faith,
yes to growth,
yes to walking closer with God?

That one decision may be the maybe that changes everything.

A Simple New Year Prayer

Lord Jesus,
As this new year begins, help me turn my maybes into faithful steps forward.
Teach me to seek You first, to trust You fully, and to walk closer with You each day.
Where I am weak, be my strength.
Where I hesitate, give me courage.
Let this year be less about hoping—and more about becoming who You are calling me to be.
Amen.
